Kefalonia Must Visits

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands (Corfu, Paxi, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Ihtaca, Zakynthos and Kithira) in Greece, with a surface of about 780 square km.

Kefalonia is placed just in front of Corynth gulf entrance, at a distance of 30 km from the west coast of the Peloponnese.

Kefalonia

Kefalonia is also the most mountainous of the Ionian Islands in Greece with Mount Ainos standing at 1628 meters tall, this mountain divides the island in two parts. The peak of Enos Mountain is also a beautiful national park with a local breed of free-range horses.

Vasilis Larentzakis

My expertise comes for the middle part of Kefalonia where the treasures are hiding.. .

Our greek wholesale food supplier, and more recently good friend Vasilis Larentzakis is originally from Kefalonia where he spent his youth. Below are Vasilis’s must visits for a great time on this beautiful island.

Myrtos beach

Myrtos beach is that stunning picture post card beach that you’ve seen photographed from the winding roads above dozens of times and probably part of the reason why so many people go to Kefalonia.

Myrtos beach is found on the west coast up towards the north of the island, it’s accessed via a steep, winding road and is well signposted. It’s advised to get there early as there’s only a small car park at the beach level, if you’re late you’ll end up having to park up the road and walk down or more importantly walk back up at the end of the day!

Antisamos

Surrounded by verdant hills, this beach is one of the most beautiful and popular beaches in Antisamos—loved for its shiny white pebbles and clear waters full of marine life. Here, snorkel amongst fish, go kayaking, take a lesson at the water sports school, and lounge on a sunbed while admiring views of Ithaki Island in the distance. The beach gets quite crowded in summer, partly because it was featured in the Hollywood movie 'Captain Corelli’s Mandolin'; go past the beach bars to find a quieter spot to lay your beach towel. Visit the beach along with Melissani Cave (also known as Melissani Lake), both common stops on a tour of Kefalonia

Amalia

Since 2001 Kate, Cristoforos and Foteini, the chefs, the children, Amalia, Vaggelis and Dionysis and their friendly staff has been serving home made traditional food in a relaxing family environment. Situated on the coastal road in Agia Efimia Bay, it’s one of the most authentic traditional taverns of Kefalonia, with a view of the Ionian Sea, Sami and Ithaca. Food is served on a spacious terrace decorated with arbors and flowers, and the staff are friendly and helpful.

Alexandros Restaurant

"Alexandros Restaurant, is a cozy family restaurant close to Myrtos beach. Excellent cooked meals based on traditional Kefalonian cuisine, fresh fish, grilled meat and friendly prices."

Rombolis

Rombolis is a really authentic greec restaurant. It is situated in the center of a cute, small, village called Poulata. The food is pure, delicious, fresh, well prepared and nicely priced. I can especially advice lamb or goat, prepared in various ways.

Kaliva tou psara

There is no real menu here. Just go into the kitchen and see what's freshly caught. Let the owner cook it, serve with a simple Greek salad, bread, home cooked chips. Even the wine is home made - interesting taste but not in a bad way! Add in a pudding to share and a coffee for an overall sum of €35 for 2

There are of course a number of gastronomic alternatives with the most famous being ' Tasia's ' sea food place. Situated at the most idyllic village of Kefalonia it is certainly worth a visit.
